Steamy Kitchen’s Big Holiday Giveaway

This year, I want to make each holiday gift really count, as I’m being frugal AND thoughtful. I’ve got to be careful and really teach the bebes about the value of money and the art of selecting the perfect gift for each person.

I’m not doing a great job, as yesterday I gave Andrew $33 to shop for me, Scott, Nathan, Mimi and Papa. His elementary school had a fundraiser where they had an entire set-up of useless gifts that you’d never buy yourself but feel like a cheap-ass if you don’t buy something because the school that is responsible for teaching my child things that I can’t (like math, following directions and assembling !$(*&!% toys) is underfunded. Though honestly, I’d rather write a check for $300 and give that to the school than to spend $300 on useless crap (ugly wrapping paper? too-sweet chocolates? magazine subscriptions that I don’t need?) and only have 10% of that end up going to the school. But I digress.

So Andrew comes home with 6 little gift bags in his backpack and runs to me clutching his $2.80 in change in his other hand. He proudly says to me, “Mama, I picked out perfect presents for everyone!” And then he started stuffing our stockings with the presents.

Hmmm…I couldn’t resist the curiousity and copped a feel (no peeking of course, that’s against the rules…but FONDLING? totally appropriate). The object in my stocking felt suspiciously like a new set of round, bouncy boobs.

Now THAT’S the type of fundraiser I’d totally lay down for.

But then on second thought, $6 might only buy a coupla rubber super bounce balls.

A Few of My Favorite Things

I’ve tested, tasted and played with lots of toys this year, and here are my absolute favorites that would make fantabulous holiday gifts. I’m giving away a bunch of gifts to you – just for commenting – so make sure you enter the random drawing to win:

Contest is over! Here are the winners…

(I’m sure I’ll be adding more gifts to giveaway in the next few days too)

Himalayan Pink Salt Blocks and Plates

himalayan pink salt plates and blocks

As you know, I’m totally obsessed with all things salt – from making your own Asian finishing salts to salting your steaks and it’s even an accessory to cheating on my husband.

The Meadow has gorgeous Himalayan Pink Salt Plates and Blocks from Pakistan that are so unique. You can use the glowing pink plate to grill, saute, chill, bake, serve and cure. Instead of salt on food – this is food on salt, and the Himalayan Pink Salt Plate imparts its delicate saltiness onto and into the food. When you’re done, just rinse, dry and store for next time.

Steaks on Himalayan Salt Block
Flatiron steaks on a large salt block

I’ve chilled the salt block for a couple of hours in the refrigerator and then used it as a serving platter for carpaccio, cheeses and fresh fruits. Any food that has a bit of moisture will pick up some of the salty goodness!

I’ve also placed the block on the outdoor grill and sauteed wild mushrooms on it – the salt block seasoned my mushrooms perfectly. The plate heats up to 500F and sears the food beautifully. I’ve yet to try steaks, but will be playing with that this weekend.

The prices are very reasonable – I’m eyeing this salt slab for sushi Sushi Slab for $19.95 and this salt grater plus salt rockSalt Grater plus Himalayan Pink Salt Rock for $16.95

Plus, owner Mark Bitterman is awesome – he’s the first person I’ve ever met more passionate about salts than I am! Just a great small business based in Portland, Oregon that I hope you’ll support.

The Meadow is giving away a Himalayan Pink Salt Block (8x4x2 inch)

The Snazziest Bread Knife in the World

Okay, time to get off the salt thing and move onto knives. I’ve raved about New West Knifeworks before and just can’t say enough great things about them. They’ve just announced their newest product, the Super Bread Knife – though personally I would have named it Kiss-Yer-Mama-Bread Knife because it’s so pretty you just wanna….eat bread.

If you’re giving a knife away as a present, my Mama told me to tell you that in many cultures, giving away a knife is bad luck. BUT hang on there – it’s not a “gift” if you make the recipient give you a penny back in return. So, just make sure that the recipient pays you a penny, quarter, whatever so that you’re not cursed with whatever knife god you’ll piss off, okay?

From New West Knifeworks, my choice for a gift would be either the above Kiss-Yer-Mama Bread Knife ($129 on sale now!) or the Phoenix Petty knife ($99). The Phoenix is the perfect size for most small kitchen tasks, from vegetables to fruit to cutting open packages (omg, just kidding! I worship my knife!)

I’m giving away a Super Bread Knife!

Sacred Glo Lotion Candles

Sacred Glo Lotion Candles

I met lovely Ederle on Twitter a few weeks ago and was totally smitten with the idea of a candle made of lotion. As the candle burns, the soy bean oil, shea butter, and the fragrant essential oils melt together, and create a warm, inviting pool of body lotion or massage oil that is only 2° above body temperature.

Ederle is a full-time corporate mama – and her dream is to make her Sacred Glo Lotion Candles a thriving business.

I know you’ll just love these lotion candles! In my sexy-hot days B.C. (Before Children) I used to love pouring hot candle wax on my lover. Made a mess, though and then would have to spend the next day scraping the hardened wax off the floors. I know, you used to do that too, right?

Um. no?

okaymeneitherjustkidding.

Global Gardens Award Winning Olive Oil and Mango Champagne Vinegar

Global Gardens Olive OilGlobal Gardens Mango Champagne Vinegar

These two together make the best salad dressing. The Mango Champagne Vinegar ($16) comes in a curvy carafe and paired with their award winning Mission Extra Virgin Olive Oil – the combo makes any salad sexy. The olive oil is bright, buttery with a sagey finish.

Global Gardens also has other interesting fruit champagne vinegars – like Blood Orange, Pomegranate and Green Apple.

Photo Canvas from Canvas R Us

I’ve saved my personal favorite for last – I took some pics of the rugrats in the backyard a few weeks ago and sent them into Canvas R Us. A week later, I got 4 individual wooden framed canvas prints back, and they are now hanging in my family room. It instantly brightened and warmed up the entire home – the smiles and love in these boys faces are priceless.

It’s super simple – all you have to do is upload your photo to their Canvas R Us’ website and choose the size that you want. You can get one single canvas or a collage, like me.

And look at the quality that comes back!

This is my fav pic:

Don’t they look like they NEVER fight over toys or tease each other?

It was a beautiful fall day and my kids and I went hiking at Washington Rock State Park in northern NJ. I took a photo of my son age 7 and daughter age 12 that truly captured the beauty of the day in their sweet faces.

    Vicki — 12/11/08 @ 3:03 pm

Wow, what a super giveaway! I’ve got a picture of “The Bean” in Chicago that I think would look great on canvas.

    Debra McCloud — 12/11/08 @ 3:04 pm

OK. I’m coming out of the shadows of this one! I would love to finally have one of the pictures taken of my two little babes (well, not so little anymore…they are 9 & 14, but they were little in the picture!). It’s a beautiful picture of them at the arboretum, and I’ve been a real slacker about getting something done with it!

Hard to choose…. I think the one I took the day of the ice storm last year. The sun was out and after searching for the right angle I finally captured the ice as it dripped, motionless, off the tree in front of my house.

    GORGEOUS knife, btw. Oh my…

I’m totally in with this, and thank you. So often we only give gifts to those who we personally know and see everyday.

If I were to print a canvas, I’d print one with one of my wife’s concert photos for my office. I love her stuff: http://www.redwallphotography.com

I would have a recent picture taken of my daughter. When the picture was taken, she was at swim practice and the pic was snapped just as she emerged from the water when practicing the breaststroke. The water droplets and splashes all around her are awesome. If not that picture, I would like the pic that I have of my 2 kids hugging each other at the entrance to Disneyland (thier faces beaming!!).

    Modnar (James) — 12/11/08 @ 3:58 pm

It would have to be one of the many pictures that I have taken of our two boys. One of the ones where they are not making faces at each other, or the one where the 13 year old doesn’t have the 12 year old in a head lock. Or the one where they are not making peace signs behind each others heads. Hmmm, I think I need to take some new pictures of them…

I took him to an event to recognize the fire fighters who’d been busy in our area all summer figthing many many fires. Anyway – I took several really nice photos of him – one on the back of the fire truck that is adorable – he looks like he could be a model. I’d love to have that photo on a canvas!

I am not a photographer by any stretch of anyone’s imagination, BUT — I love to take a picture of the same, beautiful tree every fall when it turns from yellow to orange to red. The people who live at the closest house to that tree ask me every year what I’m doing, and I always say, “It’s just me — taking that picture of your tree again!” and they wave me on…

I could use a great pic of my husband and I, or this adorable pic of the three kids towards the end of sitting for photos, where one is fussing that the other is touching them, one is grinning mischeviously, and one has a grimace. It’s an awesome picture. Or since those are a bit old, we could take a slew of pictures this holiday season and choose from there! I couldn’t possibly decide now! But I definitely think your giveaway gifts are AWESOME!

  177. 177

    Banzai — 12/11/08 @ 6:11 pm

Dang. Your contests are usually easy to enter but to have to decide what photo I’d want printed. I thought it was going to be hard but I know which one now. It’s not really a happy cheery xmas kind of thing but I’ve got one of my sister, my mother and my grandmother at my youngest brother’s wedding that I think I’d use (provided I could find it). They’ve all passed so one picture of all three would be special. :)

  178. 178

    michelle-f — 12/11/08 @ 6:12 pm

I would probably want to have a canvas of a festival scene in the village of Batuan, Bali (Indonesia), where there were a lot of colorful umbrellas, offerings, and other decorations.

woah, salt blocks and mango champagne vinegar?!! the things you learn on the internet!!
IF i was pregnant, i’d love to have a maternity picture put on to the canvas…but, as it has not happened yet (sighhhhh), probably an old family picture that includes my grandmother, my mother, my two sisters, and myself!!

    Hi, Jaden.

My mother-in-law, who is rather elderly and no longer willing to travel (she lives in a TINY Mississippi town nowhere near an airport), hasn’t seen my daughter Jackson in two years. I’d love to be able to give her a canvas portrait of her now-seven-year-old granddaughter!
    Best wishes,
    Stephanie

    Lauren — 12/11/08 @ 6:42 pm

I’m salivating over all this! Amazing finds.

For the photo.. tough call. The portraits look beautiful. Unless I could find the perfect landscape that captures memories (like of my grandparents’ house nestled in the hillside), I probably would go with a picture of my dad holding me as a baby with a huge beard and an even bigger grin on his face.

  193. 193

    lisa — 12/11/08 @ 6:44 pm

I would probably print a photo of my daughter and I at the Arctic Ocean.

Wow. This truly is the season of giving. I would canvas a photo of the family; either one taken in front of the Bean in Chicago, or on the beach in Mexico. Each photo is informal, shows a family just hanging, happy. And the backgrounds in both would look great on canvas.

    Bonus! I posted to Facebook.

    Cody Proctor — 12/11/08 @ 7:11 pm

My family has some strange affinity for jumping photos. When my wife and I were on our honeymoon in Eureka Springs, Arkansas a year and a half ago, I pulled out the tripod to attempt an automatic timer jump picture. I would set the timer and then scramble up the hill in front of the giant Jesus statue and we would commence jumping frantically until the photo was taken. This was the only one where we were both in the air.

I would really love to have a picture printed on canvas of my late wife, taken in Idaho on the Snake River shortly before she died. WooHoo I love gifts from Santa! The pic with the boys is priceless, all I keep thinking is what great bribe material that will be in their teen years, almost as good at “nakid” baby pics!

As for what pic I would put on the canvas, I have this string of 4 intimate BWs that I took of me and my fiance (get your head out of the gutter, nothing too dirty, think more feet/legs intertwined, holding hands, his backside!). I use them instead of a headboard. I would love to change them into canvas instead of the framed ones I have.

I’m a brand new photography student, and while on my first photography retreat (away from husband and home and laundry for 10 days!) I stumbled upon a labyrinth crafted of stones and gravel and native grass growing through the rocks.

I wanted this trip to be sort of an awakening for me as well as fun and educational–and as I walked that labyrinth and took photos of it, the sun began to set and so much about my life just sort of began making sense. I felt so serene and at peace!

I took a photo of the labyrinth just after I walked it, as the sun was setting over the mesas behind me. That photo will always be a reminder of the moment I found myself.

Those knives are so handsome, the Kobe beef burgers look good too. For the canvas I’d chose a picture of our family from our last trip to Hungary.

I’ll see if I can add something to myspace. I’ll be back to add Bonus if so.

    martingale — 12/11/08 @ 10:44 pm

Blame it on the advent of inexpensive cameras, but during our wedding last summer, guests brought their own cameras and took pictures of us. Our pictures, taken by official wedding photographers, had the heads and arms of various guests with their faces covered by their digital cameras, taking their own pictures. I would like to print that one single perfect shot, no clutter, just us two.

There is this one pic of me and my husband on our wedding reception day. It was the only one where we didn’t pose for the camera and that of course turned out the best pic. Been meaning to frame that for a while :)

    ChefRunner — 12/11/08 @ 11:42 pm

My brother-in-law took a beautiful picture of my husband and me up in Northern Idaho on a camping trip. It looks almost candid; we’re sitting on a rock in front of a lake leaning in toward each other and I’m wearing his old plaid shirt.

  315. 315

    Lily — 12/11/08 @ 11:54 pm

I think I’d have to go with a photo of my maternal grandmother. She was such a beautiful woman, and taken from us far too early. I am amazed at how she managed to keep her family healthy and alive during the war long enough to flee Germany to safety in the US. Learned english via listening to the radio no less!

My picture is of my 3 yr old at Bellows beach in Waimanalo, on Oahu. It is early morning, the water is turquoise the sand is white and not another soul is in sight – just my son, with his curly locks and “nudie bum,” facing the water, back to camera, sitting on top of the grand sand castle we had just built. If I won, I would give it to my husband as a return home from Iraq gift – it’s hard to send him anything now, for Christmas, because of where he is and lack of space to keep anything, but he would love this for when he gets back.

Definitely a picture of my friends and I when we all dressed up as Waldo. It was the day for our senior class picture (1,000 seniors), so a group of 20 friends decided to wear red and white strip shirts. We had to make our own glasses out of paper and bought balloons. Let’s just say we stick out like sore thumbs. One of the best senior highlight moments.

It would be of our family, husband, kids, me and dog grilling out in our backyard. We always have so much fun and one of the few times we are all in the same place at the same time.

    Matt — 12/12/08 @ 10:55 am

My wife and I tied the knot just over half a year ago. There’s this shot of us from above of me holding her in my arms and spinning. It’s the background on my laptop and I think it would be a pretty good background in our living room!

    Happy Holidays!

My favorite picture is of my kids and I in a pile of beautiful fall leaves. It’s my favorite because I love autumn and I love being reminded that it’s ok to be playful.

I cant even start to choose which one Id like the most. I mean, the salt block, it’s just so intriguing. That sexy looking knife, well, very sexy. Kobe burgers? Who wouldn’t want THAT? EVOO and mango champagne vinegar sound very interesting and that photo canvas is something that I could use to print our wedding pictures on. Choosing to win just 1 is a tough job. ;)

2008 was the most difficult year of my life! i had a lot of family drama and struggles with my marriage but as the year comes to a close, we are on the up-and-up and are rebuilding and restrengthening our little home. what relief! one of my favorite decorating tools is stretching vintage fabrics over frames, exactly like those canvas photos, so this would be perfect for our home. i would use high-contrast black and white photos of my husband and i. :)

The photo I’d use is one I took on Heron Island in Australia. I had gotten up early to watch the sunrise but because Heron Island is so small, (you can easily walk all the way around it) if I turned one direction I could watch the moon set and if I turned the other way I could watch the sun rise. It was beautiful.

    Joanna — 12/14/08 @ 4:45 pm

I took a trip up to the Canadian Arctic over the summer, and my friend and I got to ride an ATV around. While I drove, she sat behind me and took pictures, and there’s this one with the back of my helmet bottom center. Above the helmet, there’s a barely-noticable road; to the right is the shoreline, with chunks of ice floating in the water, and there is not a single other person or building or ANYTHING in sight. Plus the sky is bluer than I ever thought possible. It’s the best picture from the best trip I’ve ever taken, and even if I don’t win I might get it on canvas anyway!

  634. 634

    Aster — 12/14/08 @ 4:48 pm

    Wow! What a generous gift.

My partner and I took a trip to France in November and spent a rainy day in Aix-en-Provence. As we were walking through the winding streets, the sun came out for a brief moment, brightening the honey-hued buildings in front of us. A girl with a yellow umbrella ambled past, and I snapped the shot. That’s what I’d have printed.

This is going to sound cheesy but I would probably print the first photo that is taken when my hubby and I see our child for the first time–even though I’m sure I’ll look like crap after giving birth, it’s such a huge life-changing moment and it’d be so great to have that reminder in the house (esp later when it’s 3 am and the baby can’t sleep again and we’re ready to pull our hair out!)

I can’t believe the wonderful prizes! I’ve learned so much from you just reading your blogs and your very funny too (flattery will get me everywhere??). I’m sincere about the things I’ve learned from you, especially how to sharpen my knives and how to peel a pomegranite correctly. I first started following your articles in the Tampa Tribune and I love your sarcasm and humor.

Mrs. Claus, since you are doing the random drawing on Christmas morning my wishlist would be to win the very cool New West Knifeworks knife or the canvas. I have a toddler who keeps me young and young at heart. I’d have his cute little mug on the canvas. Thanks for the opportunities.

I just finished a photobook of my 2 girls (ages 8 and 4). It’s a collection of pictures taken of them throughout this year with just the 2 of them in it. It’s wonderful! It was the first time I ordered a photobook online. I would like to put the cover shot on canvas. It’s a close-up headshot of the two of them lying on top of eachother on our living room sofa. They both have this perfectly natural smile on their faces … sisters and BFF!

  706. 706

    Pearl Maxey — 12/16/08 @ 9:01 pm

Wow, if you chose me I don’t know what I would pick. Anyway, I would put a pic of my two daughters with my grandmother who just passed on canvas to put in our livingroom so that they have a constant reminder of where they come from and that the people in your family and their love are always with you.

  707. 707

If I could print another pic it would be of both my girls again, from this summer at Great America with their faces painted (not really worth the $20 each, but the pics are beautiful). I would then take the credit for the canvas as I gave it to my husband for our anniversary.

I just came back from a trip to San Miguel de Allende in Mexico with 6 women friends (ranging from ages in the 40s to 89), and *everything* we saw looked like art. So either something I took because it looked so beautiful (displays of vegetables at the outdoor market took a lot of my camera space) or one of all of us, or one of the 89-year-old, who instigated the whole trip.

  733. 733

    Carolyn Jung — 12/17/08 @ 10:37 pm

I ate sashimi once that was served on a pink slab of salt just like this. It was so cool! And what a great taste revelation. You didn’t need soy sauce; all you needed was to slide the piece of fish over the salt slab and it was enough to impart just the necessary saltiness. Moreover, unlike with soy sauce, the salt slab did not mask the fresh, sweet, briny flavor of the fish one iota.

LOL, I have to say, I’m not fond of using oil in bed, it stains the sheets and won’t come out unless I pull out my Martha Stewart references. Personally, I don’t think my boyfriend is salty enough. ;) He thinks it’s so weird, but I love following a trail of salt. As for the canvas, I was going to say him salted, but I have a feeling my mother wouldn’t approve. There is this American flag at a car dealership about 6 blocks away from where I live, and the flag is so tattered it’s a bit shameful. People have asked him to replace it, but his answer is that, the flag represents the tattered conditions of America. He says he won’t replace the flag until Bush leaves office. I think I might have that canvased, it’s sad, but still a politcal statement, even though it is illegal.
