New Steamy Kitchen web design!

New Steamy Kitchen web design!

I can’t wait to tell you about my visit with Martin, I’ve got a ton of photos plus a video to share with you showing off Martin’s awesomely talented knife skills. I just want to go on record and say, move over, Jackie Chan..the Yan man can carve a whole chicken in 18 seconds flat. one handed. blindfolded. and riding a unicycle. In fact, I think that Martin and his amazing cleaver deserves to star in a high-action video game. Simply put, this man rocks.

Oh yes, to answer your question, his accent is REAL. He totally made fun of me for even asking!

I haven’t had the chance to put together the post for Martin, cuz as you can see, I’ve spent my entire weekend remodeling Steamy Kitchen! Each time that I come up with a major SteamyKitchen.com redesign, I complain that CSS is the sound of brain matter leaking from my head. This blog coding is hard stuff!

In the end, though, I may not keep this design – it’s loading very very very slow – and I’m trying to figure out why the slideshow is lagging a few seconds before it works correctly.

So, please be patient while mama tries on this new dress! Give me a shoutout and tell me what you think. I’ve got more spiffy things to launch on the site, but it’s gonna take some time because if I have to edit the CSS, HTML, PHP or JS one more stinkin’ time, I might just HICCC: huddle in a corner and collapse with a armful of chocolate. Will you tell me how long it takes for the slideshow to render on your computer? Just hit refresh and count. It takes me about 4 seconds – which is 3 seconds too long for my opinion.

I’ve stayed up late the past 3 nights and tonight…Scott left me a trail of jello shots to lure me back to bed so I can get some rest.

Now that’s one sexy man.

    Jaden,

I like the design! Loads fine in Firefox 2 on WinXP. I especially like the slideshow. How’dja do that?

I totally understand about staying up late 3 nights in a row to pummel that HTTP, CSS, JS, SH*T into submission. Sometimes it makes you just want to cry. Jello shots are good. I’d take a good tawny port.

Just noticed your copyright notice at the bottom. Fish sauce is too nice for those types. They should be dunked in fermented DURIAN!

I don’t mind it at all..it loads quite ok on my end. CSS is still better than HTML…or is is the other way around? Good luck with this.

  3. Gretchen Noelle

I think it looks good, flows well. Loads fine here. But, I admit, I don’t see any kind of slideshow. So, maybe that isnt loading? (But I don;t see a gaping hole either!) Good job!

  4. City Girl DC

I love the new site too! It looks amazing. I’ve referred to your pho posting many times while cooking. You’re a rock star girl! And to have a husband who lures you to bed with jello shots…what can I say? Lucky girl!

  5. Cenk

This is definitely a huge improvement. Your hard work definitely shows. I love the tabs at the top. And it is loading fine on my end as well!

  6. Fran Magbual

The new look is great! The slide show loads slower than the rest of the page naturally, but once it loads everything works fine. I use Firefox 2.0 on a Mac.

  7. Betty

Looks great. Everything loaded fine for me. Can’t wait to hear about your adventures with Martin. I’ve watched him on TV and his knife skills do look amazing. Happy dreaming.

  8. mirinblue

Loads perfectly including slide show and I really like the new look! Cleaner, more professional! Thanks!

Scott’s got a trail of jello shots and you are sitting here typing. Run woman run :p.

It’s loading fine for me and I like it. However, to get to the post, we have to click on the picture. Can we click on the write up and get in? or is it just working funny for my system.

Love the new design.. :) Your load time is being killed by the two arrows in your slideshow, however. Downsize those and the slideshow will load much faster. (And the foodbuzz ad is huge, too… see if they’ll give you a more compressed file.)

    It looks awesome though :)

I like the slideshow, although everything takes about 4 seconds for me to load as well. I think the hierarchy on the homepage was a little more prominent before, making it a little easier to navigate and figure out where you wanted to go. It’s easy to be a critic, though, right?

And 18 seconds, seriously? Mad, mad skills.

  12. Scott

Love the design, but dude…the font is killing me! It looks like “draft” quality on my printer…really hard to read, and it looks the same in IE as it does in Firefox.

Hmm, not sure if I like this new design yet. I’ll have to check it out a little more. I didn’t see the slideshow at first because my bookmark goes directly to that particular post and not the home page. My first impression was that the slideshow arrows were too large and the boxes of text and graphics below were also too large. To me, not enough information showed up on the page to be able to see exactly where I wanted to go next.

I’m not sure how I like the new design either to be honest. Maybe it will take a few visits to get used to it. I liked the old design too. It was a bit simpler/cleaner to navigate.

The slideshow loads right away (IE) but the directional arrows (forward/back) do not consistently work for me.

    Just my 2 cents :)

About 4-5 seconds, Firefox, Ubuntu 7.04. It’s pretty sluggish when I’m also running Pandora, though.

None of which matters terribly, because I get to your posts via RSS, and this is probably the first time I’ve been to your front page in months. *sheepish grin*

Hi Jaden, I love the new look! The page takes 5.23s to load on Firefox 2.0 on a Mac.
If you’re doing a bit of web development/design you might be interested in the Firebug extension (http://www.google.ie/url?sa=t&ct=res&cd=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.getfirebug.com%2F&ei=UsYxSO2OEZrSmwPvsZGoCw&usg=AFQjCNFBkks4lrZpbnqiN8-uAnYIvmcCJw&sig2=2gV2O9_Qq03bDn7_7vuQLw) for Firefox. It’s really helpful with performance/CSS/AJAX/etc..

I’m a web developer myself, so if you need any help with the CSS or any other parts, Id be happy to lend a helping hand :)

Here loads fine with Firefox 2.0.0.14 on Mac. But I don’t know why, the service/ads in afy11.net gone bad, if I allow the blog doesn’t load very well. I know it, cuz I have a extension called NoScript that blocks javascript.

With Safari works just fine! :)

  18. Artsygal

You have my sympathies. HICCC.. I like that. I desperately need to actually design my shop/blog too and the thought of all the CSS involved has me rocking back and forth in a corner while I cuddle some cashmere. Hey.. what do you know.. the HICCC still works for cashmere. Maybe I should throw anotehr C in there so I can have both the chocolate and cashmere?

I couldn’t tell you about how well it loads. Tonight’s internet connection is being brought to me by the year 1996. Sooooo… freaking… slow…. every… where…. Good thing I have chocolate pudding and some knitting to keep me busy inbetween page loads!

  19. Dianasaur

It loaded right away for me, but I have Firefox so that could make a difference. Honestly, it might take me a little while to adjust to the new look. I think it’s amazing you did this on your own, I could never accomplish that. But I felt overloaded and confused at first. It just felt like there was a lot all over the place to me. Sorry, I’m just trying to be honest. But I totally love your blog!

  20. noobcook

I love the revamp! The first time, it takes about 10 seconds to load, but subsequently, it’s about 3-4 seconds, which isn’t too bad to me really. Looking forward to reading about your visit with Yan! XD

  21. Kitt

My reader took me directly to this post, which has a red background under all the text, which is hard to read! Is it supposed to be that way? I’m on Firefox 2.0.0.14 on a Mac. On the front page, the slideshow loads quickly, though. I didn’t see a link to this post there.

I’m sure you’ll work the kinks out soon! Tweak, tweak, tweak. Ain’t web design fun?

  22. Jennifer

Got to admit, I’m not thrilled with the new layout either. I have uberfast internet, and it took about 6 seconds for everything to situate itself in the right places (during which time I kept starting to read what looked like the new stuff while it kept shifting around). I liked the simplicity of the old style, where I knew where new info and old info would be–e.g. I didn’t even see any mention of jello shots that everyone is talking about! Either way I’ll be back, though ;-)

  23. Leslie

Very cool that you met Yan!

As far as the redesign, it might just be my computer (PC / Firefox) but as someone else mentioned the font is almost unreadable. It is very small, light gray and “splotchy” – I’m guessing its a font incompatability issue. But I read your posts via rss feed, so in the end it doesn’t really matter to me. Feel free to email me if you want me to send you a screen shot of it.

  24. Toni

Love the new design! I have no problems reading it. The only thing that had me confused for a moment was the speed at which the top photos changed and therefore the story that goes with it. But I just clicked on it and voila! No problem with font or anything else. You’re fired up, girl!

  25. gizmar

I love Martin Yan – besides being totally incredible with his knife skills, he’s such a sweet man with a very warm personality.

  26. Spencer

I like the new layout; it definitely looks more organized and fresh.

Martin Yan (Can Cook) rocks! I still can’t smash garlic half as well as he can.

  27. AnotherSarah

The slide show loads quick with my firefox. I like the design, but when I wanted to see if you’d written anything previous to the Martin Yan post that I hadn’t read yet, I couldn’t figure out how to do that easily. I went back to the slide show and clicked on the picture that came up after Martin. That doesn’t seem so great. Maybe you could put a “previous post” button or something at the bottom of each entry?

    Looks nice though.

  28. Mike

Like Kitt, I also see the majority of the post on top of a red background which leaves the text near unreadable. I’m on Firefox 2.0.0.11 under Windows XP. I want to redesign my site, but these sorts of issues drive me to drink…well, more than usual. :o

  29. pictomo

Safari Version 3.1.1 (5525.18) Mac OS X 10.5.2 (9C7010)….whatever you did in the last 24 hours has made the slideshow run flawlessly as opposed to the overlapping jumble of pictures and text that I saw a day or so ago. THe entire site looks so great…I like that the ads don’t bump the text while loading like they used to in the older design. I especially like that the adsaren’t the first thing I see. The colors and layout are really beautiful as well. You’re hard work is certainly paying off!

…and that photo of the tea is really spectacular….you must be running on little or no sleep….bravo!

  30. Helen

Hi Jaden, I really like the design around the top of the site (the background) but I’m going to be honest, I did prefer the old design, although it seems I am in the minority so I obviously have poor taste! I just think that it is a bit difficult to navigate and it has less of a blog appearance now, more of a corporate one. I do like it though, maybe I just need to get used to it.

  31. Asianmommy

I love the new design. Very sleek! It used to take a while to load, but now it works great.
