Figs With Bri needs our help

My friends, Bri of Figs With Bri blog needs our help.

Bri is one of the 5% of women diagnosed with breast cancer under the age of 30. That was two and a half years ago. In her words,

“I was 28 … I was told I would need a mastectomy (full removal) of my right breast. It was horrifying and surreal. Particularly since I watched my mom go through her diagnosis of breast cancer, a mastectomy and chemotherapy 14 years earlier. She was just 41 and died within six months.”

In August 2007, she started Figs With Bri - a serene, beautiful space where she shares with us her creative experiments with wonderful local organic ingredients. A month and a half ago, her worst fears came true. She learnt that her cancer has returned and metastasized to her lungs, her lymph nodes and several areas in her bones and is at Stage IV. (More at Figs with Bri)

As the great Lance Armstrong said about people like himself battling cancer: “We have two options, medically and emotionally: give up, or fight like hell.”

Bri has chosen to fight like hell.

This time, Bri wants to supplement her treatment with holistic approach as well, and unfortunately, her insurance has declined to cover these treatments.

My dear friends, Bee and Jai of Jugalbandi blog, have set up a fundraiser  - our goal was to raise $12,000 - enough money for just ONE year’s worth of out of pocket treatment expenses.

I waited until now to post about it because I wanted to give the fundraiser its tail-end boost. The love and outpouring of support from friends all over the world has been amazing and in less than 2 months, we’ve reached our goal. So, I guess the “tail-end boost” really was not needed after all!

However. Even though the goal has been reached, please don’t let that stop you from giving. If we can raise even more money and help fund her treatments partially into the next year, that would be so cool.

I’ve donated a 30-minute Flip Ultra camcorder that is my newest toy - it’s the easiest way to create and publish videos! Start making some cooking videos!

It’s the size of a small point-and-shoot camera and it’s so incredibly easy to use that I call it my “point and shoot camcorder.”

How you can contribute

The fundraiser is in the form of a raffle. There are prizes with NO BIDDERS! (i.e. the Flip Video Camcorder has no bidders yet!)

Come over and bid for something that catches your eye. Every penny raised goes to Bri’s treatment.

  • It’s amazing what can happen on the web when a few people put their heads together! I wish I was in the market for the FLiP, it looks like a cool little gadget. I am in need of a tripod though and am eyeing this cool little thing, ever used one of these before?

  • That’s a very generous gesture, Jaden. I just got one of these for my birthday a few weeks ago, but I have bid on some of the beautiful artwork already. I’m thrilled that the goal has already been reached! The food blog community is unlike any other I’ve seen. Such a spirit of cooperation and support!

  • Jaden, thank you for bringing this worthy fundraiser to my attention. I’m heading right over to the auction site.

Leave it to you to so smashingly bring in the tail-end boost. This is very generous of you, Jaden. I hope Bri feels the entire community pulling for her, we’re all behind her. Thanks for doing this, Jaden. :)

    Hi Jaden,

I have spread the words to Chinese Community as well. The story is written in Chinese and hopefully will have more people bid on items.

I just sent out a huge email to friends and family about this. if i would’ve known earlier, i would’ve donated a cookbook, signed by the author.
