After checking dozens of other blogs to see what they did, I decided to use my first name, but if I mention friends and family I only use initials. After all, it's not up to me to 'out' them on my little blog. I also put a picture up of myself, but in such a way that people who don't know me won't recognise me in the street (that's what I hope at least). Friends and family who read my blog will know exactly whom I talk about, but random readers won't. And that seems to work just fine.
