Here’s a Guided Reflection to End Your Year Strong

As the New Year approaches (or, depending on how the past year went for you, barrels in like a toddler on a sugar rush), it’s the perfect time to hit that pause button and take some time to reflect on all we’ve been through. And, before you roll your eyes at the thought of another “self-improvement” exercise (I see you), stay with me here. This is not the usual “make a bunch of resolutions you’ll abandon by February” type of guide. This is about taking stock of your highs, lows, lessons, and wins over the past year, so you can head into the upcoming year with clarity and inspired purpose. And who doesn’t love a little inspiration?

Why Reflect?

Reflection is a powerful tool for growth. By taking the time to look back on the last year, you’re collecting data on your life. What worked? What didn’t? Where did you absolutely crush it, and where did you get in your own way? Understanding these patterns not only means you become far more self-aware, but you’ll also be better equipped to set goals that actually stick and turn challenges into opportunities.

How to Reflect

We’re gonna keep this super simple. Grab a notebook, a cup of tea (or a stiff drink—no judgment), and let’s dive into these journal prompts:

1. The Highs

  • What were your biggest wins this year?
  • Which moments brought you the most joy or pride?
  • What are you most grateful for this year?

2. The Lows

  • What were the toughest challenges you faced?
  • How did those challenges make you feel, and how did you respond?
  • If you could redo one thing, what would it be?

3. The Lessons

  • What did those challenges teach you?
  • How did you grow or evolve in ways you didn’t expect?
  • What surprising silver linings appeared from situations that initially felt like losses?

4. The Wins

  • Celebrate yourself! Big or small, take some pride in what you achieved this year, even if that means just having survived.
  • How can you carry that energy into the upcoming year?
  • What are some things you want next year to include?

Turning The Tough Stuff into Growth

Let’s face it. Life isn’t always sunshine and rainbows. Some years, it feels like you’re trudging through mud in flip-flops. But challenges don’t have to define us. They can refine us, if we choose to receive them that way.

When reflecting on the tougher moments of last year, ask yourself:

  • What did this experience teach me about myself?
  • How can I use this lesson to set goals for the future?
  • What would a healthy work-life balance look like now that I know my limits?

Practical Tips for Reflection

  1. Schedule It: Don’t leave this to chance. Block out an hour or two to sit down and reflect.
  2. Be Honest: No sugarcoating or skipping over the uncomfortable bits. Growth happens when you’re real with yourself.
  3. Focus on Action: Reflection is great, but action is where the magic happens. Don’t forget to take what you’ve learned and use it to map out realistic steps for the upcoming year.
