There are also many ways to begin living a sustainable lifestyle that don’t include spending money! More like, becoming conscious of the harmful products you use in your kitchen and making a gradual shift to living in a way that’s not so wasteful.
Simple Steps to a Sustainable Kitchen
Step one, stop food waste. Become aware of what you already have in your kitchen, make a meal plan and THEN go to the grocery store. This way, you save food and money! Check out our Reverse Meal Plan for more tips on this method of living sustainably.
Step two, start using sustainable storage in the kitchen. Don’t start throwing away all of the plastic containers that you own! But as they begin to get old or if the containers you have are already old and stained, recycle and replace them with eco-friendly storage methods like bees wax wraps, food huggers, or silicone bags. There are also silicone covers that can fit over almost any bowl, baking pan or cup!
The third step is to become more conscious of the cleaners you’re using in your kitchen. Many cleaners contain chemicals that can irritate your lungs or nose, cause headaches or other severe health problems. Bottom line, if its not good for us, its probably not good to send down our drains and into the environment.

Fourth, use reusable bags at the grocery store! I think this is one of the easiest steps because I know you have a drawer in your house full of plastic grocery bags waiting to be used so just start with those. Instead of using new grocery bags or fresh produce bags, start reusing the ones you already have.
Once those have run their course, recycle and look into reusable bags on amazon you can go as basic or as fancy as you want. Also most grocery stores sell reusable bags for $1 and have a place to recycle plastic grocery bags.
For the fifth and final step, start recycling. If you are already a pro at recycling, start to take the time and check your plastics to make sure they are recyclable and clean out the containers that have sauce and whatnot stuck to the sides.
