  1. I just finished making some brown rice in the microwave. I didn’t use whatever brand Trader Joe’s sells, but some brand from another market. However, I found the instructions here as well as the instructions from the other article on brown rice helpful. I’m gonna guess that the reason people found the rice awful might be due either to eating the rice without enough flavoring to augment the taste a bit or that they were expecting the rice to have a taste & texture more closer to white rice than it has (It kinda makes me think of bran or oats).

  2. I’m not sure why everyone is posting that they don’t like the rice. I love it. It tastes more like white basmati rice than brown rice. I usually use a rice cooker with a pitch on salt (per cup of rice) and a teaspoon of butter when cooking.

  3. Just tried this Trader Joe’s quick cook brown rice tonight and it was completely tasteless and soggy. No oomph. Will not buy again.

  4. I boil the water in the kettle before adding it to the rice, and it cooks about 5 minutes faster!

Also, if you boil the water, add it to the bowl, cover, and just leave it for the day- 6-8 hours, it will have absorbed, and you can just heat it, or fry it if you want it warm. Cheers!

  5. i find this rice, well, awful; i tastes moldly. i’ve tried cooking in different liquids, but it
always comes out the same — yuk! i’d take it back, but why bother as there’s probably a billion pounds of it out there and they will sell it until it’s all gone.

  6. I add another voice of dissent to the tastiness of this product. I tried it and was very disappointed. I have had the Uncle Ben’s quick cooking brown rice (not instant) and found it much more palatable than this. I would say that if you are a TJs and want delicious, quick cooking brown rice, go to the freezer section and get yourself the frozen brown rice. That cooks up a treat in the microwave and is not as odd tasting as this product.

  7. I also tried this brown rice from trader joe’s but I didn’t see that it was a quick cooking rice and I cooked it the normal way with boiling water for 20 min so maybe that is why it turned out AWFUL. My kids and I hated the taste of it.

  8. I have good luck with cooking in the microwave rice cooker for 8 min on high, then 5 min at 50%. Then let sit for 5 min. I usually only make 1/2 cup rice and 1-1/2 cup water – just enough for my husband and me.

  9. I made a chicken & rice casserole with the rice and the rice ruined the dish. It tasted rancid and I will be taking it back to T.J.’s & getting my money back.

  10. Tasted like pond scum. I wrote TJ’s to let them know that the batch we bought should be taken off the shelves.
