Hello friend!
Happy Tuesday to you!
Yesterday, I got a notification that a package had arrived for me for Steamy Kitchen.
“Huh?! I don’t remember ordering anything!”
I waited two days before venturing out to the mailbox, combining it with a trip to the market, but all the while trying to figure out what the delivery could be.
The square box was solid. A little heavy for its size. After spraying the outside of the box with Lysol, I opened it in the car.
OH.
It was 66 ounces of hand sanitizer in a commercial refill bag, that I had ordered in haste on March 3rd.
Do you remember when stores first ran out of hand sanitizer? That was over a month ago.
Back then, hand sanitizer was like GOLD.
I just sat there in my car, with this box of 66oz/5 pounds of hand sanitizer, feeling a little silly that a month ago, I “panic-shopped” and spent 2 hours looking online for hand sanitizer. The feeling of elation and relief when I hurriedly checked out (what if they sold out as I was entering my credit card info?!) And then completely forgetting about the order as time went on.
Because without hand sanitizer…I just used soap. Without hand sanitizer, I improvised with Everclear in a spray bottle and no-rinse soap foam.
Sure, the hand sanitizer is still useful, but now, the stores have stocked up again, and you can find it easily online. Now people are panic-shopping for yeast, flour and masks.
Here’s what I learned. It’s so easy to succumb to terror and scarcity. But when I’m consumed with fear and panic, I cannot think clearly. I do irrational things.
The moment I had submitted my $29.95 payment for hand sanitizer, my panic went away. I was able to improvise, find other solutions, and make do.
We all must remember to “this too, shall pass” and to take care of each other. If you ever feel a wave of fear coming on, think:
- WWMD?: What would MacGyver do?
- if you’re religious, WWJD? WWBD?
- if you need a little laugh, WWRWD?: What would Robin Williams do?
What are you grateful for today? Is there anyone you need to reach out to and just say hello, I’m thinking about you?
Sending you a basket of freshly baked bread and really good butter and maybe some homemade peach jam too.

You are so right about fear driving people into doing things they wouldn’t normally do. I was fortunate to find some flour this week, however, yeast continues to be elusive. This too shall pass. Such minor concerns when people around the world are dying of this virus. Wishing you and your family good health. Pats for Duke!
What happened to the Macbook Air that had a drawing expiration date of 6/17? I don’t see it on today’s drawing list.

Lucky you! Here in NJ we can’t find soaps, hand sanitizer, paper towels or TP. And forget about anything boxed (Rice a Roni, etc). Stay safe!
