One of the very first recipes my Mom taught me how to cook was a shrimp stirfry with garlic, green onion and ginger. Mom cooks without measuring – just a spoonful of this, a glug of that, and a three-finger pinch of another.

At first, I knocked her entire cooking rhythm off. I kept stopping her and asking her, “how many tablespoons was that?” and then re-measuring and writing down on my index card. (I remember hearing her grumble a bit when I stopped her for too long as I scribbled directions furiously.)

Here’s the very first recipe Mom taught me: Chinese Stir Fry Shrimp. It’s simple and cooks in 15 minutes.
