This is a review of the Neoflam Carat Cookware, including both PROs and CONs.
Neoflam Carat Cookware Review
I was so excited to review this set, so many cookware manufacturers pump out the same ol’ design and feature the same types of material. Neoflam is a South Korean company. and has been making cookware since 1990, and sells their wares in over 70 countries.
We’ve been using the Carat set for the past month for everyday family meals.
PRO: It’s unique, beautiful and resembles a cut diamond. Pretty in any modern kitchen.
Neoflam has a line of cookware that’s made of cast aluminum. That means the aluminum is poured into molds. The larger pots are one-piece, meaning the handles and the pot itself is cast together. Take a look at the animation on Neoflam’s website for how they’ve taken ideas from automobile industry manufacturing line for their cookware.
PRO: The larger pots and dutch ovens have no rivets! That makes it SO easy to clean, no grease hiding around the edge of the rivets or screws.
The nonstick coating is made of Ecolon which is, “an all-natural nonstick coating. Ecolon is a sol-gel solution derived from silicone and other naturally-occurring minerals to provide durable, scratch resistant, nonstick performance. Ecolon is the best source for a nonstick cooking surface without PTFE and its potentially harmful side effects.” (from Neoflam’s website)
PRO: Nontoxic, all natural. Can use stove or oven.
CON: The coating is very thin and scratches easy. You MUST use wood, silicone, plastic cooking utensils. I wish the coating was thicker and more durable.
PRO: Aluminum heats up fast! Also, it’s lightweight, making it ideal for cooks who are looking for something easy to lift, easy to clean and easy to cook with. I have tendonitis, tennis elbow and carpal tunnel in my arms, and I love that the Carat cookware is lightweight.
The PANS in the collection (cookware with one long handle) have a bakelite handle that’s attached with a screw.
CON: I’m not a fan of how the handle attaches. Oil and grease gets trapped in this little spot. The good thing is that the screw is on the underside of the handle, a little harder for ingredient bits to get into. Bakelite is a one of the earliest manufactured synthetic plastics. It’s heat resistant, so the handle stays cool, but the manufacturing and disposal of Bakelite material is controversial.
PRO: The lid has a built-in steam release! Great design feature. It lets the steam escape without having to prop up the lid (which I usually do with a chopstick LOL). The lid is also lightweight and domed to allow condensation to drip back down on the food and keep it moist.
The Neoflam Carat 5-Piece Cookware Set (3 pieces plus 2 lids) comes with:
- 1.5 QT Covered Saucepan w/ Stainless Steel Knob
- 4 QT Covered Stockpot w/ Stainless Steel Knob
- 11″ Frying Pan
Retails for $189 (plus 20% discount if you sign up for their email list)
The Carat set is a pleasure to cook with. My favorite piece is the dutch oven and stockpot. Because they are both lightweight and both pot and lid can go into the oven, those to pieces are so versatile. Plus, the set is pretty in my kitchen!
